Modernity in World History: A Critical Positioning

English

As the Boğaziçi University Islamic Studies Club (BİSAK), following last year’s event with Vahdettin Işık on "The Tension Between Modernization and Islamization in Turkey," we continued exploring the topic of modernity from a different perspective this year. On Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at 17:00, Lütfi Sunar delivered a presentation titled "Modernity in World History: A Critical Positioning" at NH 405.

The event emphasized the need to reevaluate modernity not just as a Europe-centered development but in the context of global historical interactions and external factors. Lütfi Sunar critically discussed how modernity transformed societal structures and relationships between God, nature, and individuals. He also examined how historical narratives often position Europe as the central and unique agent of modernity.

Participants had the chance to gain a broader and more holistic perspective on the origins of modernity.
